Receptivity

So I’ve been noticing a lack of comments on this blog lately. That means one of two things –

  1. Nobody really reads these anymore – the blog reading days have passed. Or…
  2. Our content is not interesting enough and unworthy of comment.

I can understand this…I have read many blogs and thought, “I really have nothing to say to that”. To see what the problem is, I thought I would throw out an issue that’s worthy of discussion and ask for your thoughts, O faithful blog readers. What do you think about this…

“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11

I think it’s a proven biblical fact that there are some cultures in the world that are more receptive to the gospel than others. The Bereans were obviously more receptive to the gospel than the Thessalonicans. I don’t think it was just that Paul ran into some people in Berea who happened to be open. I think that the culture in Berea was more receptive to the truth of the gospel and lined up Paul’s teachings against the Old Testament to see if his teachings were true.

Now that my best friend is giving his life in the service of poor and dying people in Uganda and having incredible success, I’ve often had this thought…

Is our time as evangelists (Christians who are obeying the great commission) best spent in the regions of the world that are most receptive to the gospel?

Should receptivity be a factor in choosing where we take our missions trips and plant our churches?

I’ll never forget a conversation that I had with missionary Richard Michalski on a mission trip to the Ukraine. He was pouring out his convictions on this subject in between spoonfuls of pasta. He told me that if you added up all the dollars spent on evangelism in a certain nation and divided that by the number of souls that were coming to Christ you would have a “cost per soul” ratio.

He told me that the cost per soul in the USA was around $10,000. So for every 10,000 dollars that we spend on evangelism in our country, 1 person comes to Christ. The shocking part was still to come. He said that in the Ukraine, the cost per soul was around $1. In Africa? A mere 10 cents. So if we sent our 10,000 dollars to Africa instead of reaping 1 soul in America, we would see 100,000 people come to Christ. He talked about how there are regions of the world that are under a “grace for harvest”.

Now I’m not sure where he got those figures and if they’re exactly accurate. But he does bring up an interesting point. Should we be focusing our money and man power endeavoring to reach a culture that is mostly closed to the gospel (like much of the western world) when there are millions of people in other parts of the world who have never heard the gospel and are very receptive to the message?

Or to make it even more personal – Why am I living in an area that is statistically unreceptive to the gospel when I could be living in a region and helping reap a massive harvest?

Should receptivity be a factor? Or should we be specifically commanded by the Spirit of God in every mission trip, church plant and choice of residence? Obviously he wants a witness in the hard mission fields of France, Germany, Spain, Japan and the like. Did Paul have the direct command of Christ to go to each city? Or did he just preach wherever he went? Sometimes that seems clear…sometimes not.

It’s clear that God’s plan is to redeem every tribe, tongue and nation. But does it make more sense to start with the receptive regions of the earth so they can be part of the army of missionaries that flood the unreceptive areas?

I know that I’m living in direct response to the call of God to live in Nampa, ID. But as FLC continues to grow in number and influence, I’m realizing that God is calling our church to have global impact. The question is…where do we begin?

I’d love your thoughts on this one...

Okay, I have plenty to say on this topic but am dead-dog tired. I will start off with this and come back for more later: financially, a soul cannot be considered an expense as much as it can be considered an investment. Viewing only the economic level let's look at a millionaire in so. cal. and a farmer in Africa. So it takes $.10 to bring the farmer to Christ and possibly $10,000 to bring the millionaire to Christ. In one year's time, if they continue in obedience, the farmer may bring an approximate tithe of $50 to the House of God. The so. cal. millionaire will bring at least $100,000 to the kingdom in one year. So it turns out that the African farmer is more expensive (or less reproductive) than the millionaire. As the years continue the gain from expensive evangelism for affluent people will far outweigh the initial cost of bringing them to salvation. The more they mature, the more they can overflow their wealth in to reaching the poor.

So in one year:

Salvation of farmer: $.10
Tithe of farmer: $50
Total gain for more
evangilizing: $49.90
which is capable of
reaching how many
more Africans? 499

Salvation of mill. $10,000
Tithe of mill. $100,000
Total gain for more
evangelizing: $90,000
which is capable of
reaching how many
more Africans? 900,000

So in the first year the African provides for 49 more souls, while the American provides for 900,000. All of a sudden a $10,000 soul seems rather strategic.

Moral of the story: save your rich neighbors, disciple them well, and then send them and their money to www.pleadthecause.org

Caleb and Danny, I wish I could be there for the conversation this stirs.

Didn't I say I was too tired for a long post? uggh...

good point... also to be pondered...what is better - to spend thousands of dollars person to go on short term (weeks-months) mission trips to get our "fix" or to just send the money to where missionaries are already established and could do so much more good.

but how many real (full time) missionaries are born from a passion lit while on one of these short term missions.

when we factor in money- into any equation of comparison between America and anywhere else it's a sticky topic of putting a price on a soul- making money count for more than it should.

hopefully with the millions spent here in America there are a few more sara and richards, brent and virginias and the like- who take the thousands spent to win their salvation and invest it where it goes the furthest.

that's my two cents... oh and how far are you guys from Haydon Id?

"Why should anyone hear the Gospel twice before everyone has heard it once?" - Oswald J. Smith.

I've heard statistics that say people need to hear the Gospel 7 times (on average) before they will respond positively. I think someone from the Western world did the research on wealthy, self-sufficient people who instinctively believe they have no need for a Savior.

Regardless of the financial investment, I think we have to look at what Jesus told us to do in evangelism. In Matthew 10, Mark 6, and Luke 9, Jesus sent His disciples out to preach, and told them that after clearly presenting the message of the kingdom, they should consider whether or not they were well received. If not, they were to shake the dust off of their feet and move on, leaving the opposers of the kingdom to their own fate.

"The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few..." The money and resources are not lacking, but it's the laborers that are missing from the equation - people who are willing and able to clearly present the Gospel so that people could actually make a decision for or against Jesus Christ.

I'm voting for making sure we're presenting a clear message, and then calling the hearers (Whether in California or Congo) to a decision. If people are unwilling to receive eternal life, let's move on to the literal billions that are hungry and thirsty for eternal life rather than plowing the hardened soil of the satisfied while the others slip into eternal hell.

So many people really are waiting to hear the Gospel. It's real good news...

Of course I read your blog! I am a faithful reader…however, I haven’t seen any comments showing you read mine…just a thought.
My thoughts on your question…
We see countless stories all throughout the bible of “the one.” The one sheep, the one coin, the one son, and my personal favorite, the story of Jesus and the Demoniac. It shows Jesus and His disciples working and putting out incredible effort to row across the lake. They were tired and had invested. In the end, only one person was saved. Wasn’t Danny the one who always talked about the value of our time in personal finances? Out time is all we have, and when we are working our employers are buying our time. So Jesus invested a bunch of His time, which is the most valuable thing we have, and the end result was only one person. If Jesus thought it was worth it, I think we should weigh that heavily. Just because someone may not be responsive to the gospel doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to hear the truth and have the option of choosing life or death. What if someone thought it wasn’t worth it for me? Where then would the world be? True that I haven’t changed it that much yet, but I will! It’s exciting to see what God is going to do w/ me, in America. A very unresponsive and expensive place to share the gospel, but full of people that desperately need it.
I love you guys! So glad I got to see you for a few min. Danny, sorry I didn’t say goodbye!
Lots of love

Recently we went through a series on evangelism at FLC and since then I have been thinking about how the church (and me in particular) generally goes about evangelizing the world around me. I have heard for most of my life about how hard America has become towards the gospel message and have really bought into the thought. Jack Louman from City Bible Church was here recently and he presented some staggering statistics about how receptive most people are around us to the message of the Gospel. In his study that he had found, most people responded that they would be willing to go to church if someone invited them. The minority in the study were people who were actually totally opposed to the Gospel. It was the first time that I had ever heard someone present an argument for America not being hard ground for the soil of the Gospel. Since then, I have been thinking a lot about how the church in general tends to go about evangelizing. I have to wonder if we have relegated evangelism in America to the "evangelists" rather than taking up the mandate that the Bible clearly gives us for everyone named by the name of Christ. Perhaps we think that America is such difficult ground because we tend to draw the same people over and over again with evangelistic crusades and that particular crowd has become calloused to the message. Perhaps the person right across the street is eager to hear and even respond if someone would just walk over and present the message. Perhaps America is not so cold as the church is lazy (or whatever excuse we come up with for not personally sharing the Gospel). Just some thoughts. As for me personally though I have started praying and looking for opportunities every time I go to the grocery store to be the church and reach the world around me with the Gospel.

I would also like to add, that Jesus already paid the price...and He paid it for everyone! So whatever statistics you throw out there, Jesus has already paid the highest price for that one person to be saved. It also doesn't matter where the one person is georaphically located on the earth, because everyone of us are foreigners in this world...remember that?! Jesus sends us out after the lost, and I think that if they're lost, its probably going to take some effort on our part to find them right? When someone is lost in the woods, sometimes it takes days to find them again, but the key is that you keep searching until you find them. Keep sharing your faith with all those who reject Christ until we find the one person who will accept Him. Its not so much a matter of wether people are receptive, but that Jesus did not give us permission to leave people to die! And Danny, I think Tara is talking about the Kingdom Finance class, which you so passionately changed our lives with! So every penny that is spent on bringing a soul to Christ, don't you remember that God is doubling that? "Pressed down, shaken together, and running over!" Remember? And also, don't forget about all of us evangelists who are faithfully taking Christ to the lost for free; in our work places, at our school campuses, at the grocery store etc. I have to say that I don't think those statistics really are acurate, because there is so much that our God does behind the scenes! There are people coming to Jesus when we are not aware. "Be sure to stay busy and plant a variety of crops, for you never know which will grow – perhaps they all will."-Ec. 11:6. P.S. hi Danny and Jamie, love you guys!
